Inspired by opposition to the Iraq war, the Iraq Moratorium which originated in California has now been organized in the Chagrin Valley. A small group of Patriots for Change met on November 11th at the home of Becky Thomas to put the details of a local campaign together. Our first demonstration took place Sat. Nov. 17th in the Village of Chagrin Falls at 12:30 pm. We meet in front of Township Hall, carrying homemade peace signs; we passed out information about America’s involvement in the Middle East, and we will continue meeting the third Saturday of every month until we begin to pull our troops out of Iraq.
We were pleased to include in our group of 15 a person from Cleveland Hts., one from Russell, and several from Burton. Two Chagrin Falls high school students joined us and said they would be back next month. The local newspapers covered our demonstration, so we are looking forward to seeing ourselves in print this week. Elliot Berenson had these thoughts to share,” I think this went well for the first event. I separated from the group and stood on the corner of Bell and got lots of positive waves and thumbs up. I headed over to the little street that goes down to the Gamekeepers and while on the corner, a guy stopped by and we had a long discussion. He's with us all the way about ending the war and getting the troops home, but supporting the troops, to him, seemed to mean something different, maybe keeping them in the field with more material, etc. I hope he's among the ones we'll be contacting for the future. All in all, it seemed all reaction was very positive.”
We invite everyone to join us on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 12:30. Organizations who have joined the Iraq Moratorium nationally include labor unions, Iraq and Viet Nam veterans, student groups, university professors, musicians, actors, and artists.
